How Sexual Harassment in the Workplace Affected My Self Esteem - When people think of sexual harassment, they think about egregious behavior (I mean it has to be egregious to be valid, right?) exhibited by men at work. Then they often wonder if the woman is lying or exaggerating and nowadays, we hear a lot about the lack of due process for the accused. But what people really arenât talking about is how sexual harassment in the workplace affects the woman and how much her self-esteem is shattered when something like this happens at work. I have worked in many high-pressure environments in several big cities and (like many women) have been sexually harassed more than just once at work. Sexual harassment is not just confusing nor frustrating nor sickening (all of which are true), but it is also insidious and cuts right at the heart of a womanâs self-worth. Even though you did nothing, you somehow start to feel responsible. When this happened to me at work, I not only felt helpless and totally stressed out, but I also started to question everything about myself. I wondered if maybe I was too friendly and maybe not assertive enough. I was always a conscientious student and maybe was just giving too much at work and not setting clear boundaries. And I started to question the way I dressed (too stylish? Too sexy?) and my interactions with others, especially men. Sexual harassment is also very distracting. Essentially, you just wait for the next incident to happen. Itâs normal to start questioning your abilities and every word that is put into an email. There is also the lingering sense of dread of being summoned into the bossâs office. Struggling with personal relationships is also normal. I didnât feel like I could talk to many people about this, and the on the rare occasions I did, no one really seemed to understand. Itâs kind of like losing a parent â" until it happens to you, you just donât get it. And there was no way I could talk to my boyfriend about this. I honestly felt at that time that he would either see me as some radical feminist or think that this was an overreaction. It was a very lonely time. Finally, the last time it happened (this time it was really bad because it was the CEO) there was simply nowhere to go at all. He had all the power as well as the respect of the company and the community. No one would believe me which only perpetuated my self-doubt and further eroded my self- confidence. I dreaded the incessant emails (during the day, the night and on weekends) and felt totally helpless every single day. I lost weight, smoked cigarettes and drank too much wine. Thatâs the thing about losing your mental health, eventually, it takes a toll on your physical health as well. At my wits end, I finally got a lawyer to advise me. I never thought about pursuing a lawsuit, but I needed sound professional advice. And then, before you know it, you are on a âretainerâ with a lawyer and told you have a compelling case. I never wanted the protracted negotiations and not even the settlement. Honestly, I just wanted my job. And the respect of my colleagues (who invariably found out everything and treated me like a Superfund toxic waste site) â" most of which never talk to me to this day. I was fortunate to have a strong support system â" but still needed a lot help after it was all over. My self-esteem was completely gone, and I worried my career might be over. I went to therapy and secured a great job. I do not think about that time period much anymore and have come to a place of happiness. In fact, after the dust settled, a lot of good came out of it. I started writing more and publishing articles and helping other women at work. And now I just hope to help other women going through it. It will get better. Believe in yourself still. Create your own unemployment insurance Unemployment is traumatic, and people who have been there never shake the fear of going back. If youve spent five months job-hunting (an average amount of time) you have probably faced worry, uncertainty and financial desperation. Here are some things you can do while you are employed so that next time youre looking for work, the task is much, much easier: Save money The worst job hunt experiences are when you have to take the first job you get because you are risking financial ruin. If you save money when you are employed youll be able to be a lot more picky when youre looking for a new job. Almost everyone is desperate when they are unemployed, and one of the hardest things to do in an interview is act self-confident when youre feeling down. This task if even harder if youre going to be out on the street in three weeks. Also, unemployment gives you lots of time but little money to spend. If you have some savings youll be able to enjoy the time you have when youre not working. After all, you cant job hunt all day every day it would make you crazy. Network This isnt something you do when you need a job. Its something you do when you have one, when youre feeling confident. If you are good at making connections with people, and you do it regularly, then people will be there to help you when you need a job. If you contact people only when you need help you are not a networker, you are a sponge. You dont need to be friends with everyone, but you need to have some real friends. Note that friends are not people you go out drinking with occasionally. Friends are people you are very honest and forthcoming with, and people who depend on you. When it comes time to get help, its not the people youre friends with who will help they have the same information that you do. Its the friends of friends who will help. And they dont come by way of superficial connections. Focus on achievements Your resume is what gets you an interview. Even if you are using connections from your network, sooner or later, someone will say, Send me your resume and Ill take a look. Your resume should have a few, huge achievements that the rest of the lines are built around. When you are gainfully employed, look for opportunities to create these achievements. This means being selective in what projects you take on. Projects that are going to do very little for your resume should not take up a lot of your time do them as quickly as possible and move on. Projects that will give you the chance to highlight grand and quantifiable results on your resume are projects you should be willing to volunteer for. These projects are worth working late nights, taking on huge risk, and working with people you hate. On a well-crafted resume, one line of greatness can cut months off your unemployment suffering. Be creative The jobs that are staying in the US feature some form of creativity from troubleshooting, to management to strategy. Hone your skills as a creative thinker so that you can sell yourself that way next time you need to find a job. So many people who are in non-creative jobs tell me that they are creative and their job is safe from off-shoring. They are delusional. Heres a test to give yourself: Do you come up with new product ideas or features? Does set up intra-departmental process? Do you work face-to-face with other people all day? If you answered no to all three questions think hard about how to make your job more creative and people-oriented so that you can find a new job without moving to India. The good news is that each of these recommendations will improve your career. Your work will be more interesting and you will bring more joy to your job and the people you meet. The added benefit is that you will have it easier next time you are unemployed, which means a little less worrying now.

Iâm breaking that general rule by answering this headline with an enthusiastic âmaybeâ. The fact is, when it comes to data safety in the cloud, it is partially up to you. Depending on how you define âsafeâ, the answer may be ânoâ. Nothing is entirely safe in the cloud. Then again, nothing is entirely safe anywhere. We can loosely define the cloud as someone elseâs hard drive. The cloud is not some magical, digital fairy land where disembodied data comes to stay. It is a series of giant, fast, expensive server farms. The cloud is not some soft and fluffy otherworld reality. It is iron, big, bad, stone-cold iron. It is just housed somewhere else, and managed by someone else. As an individual, there is a lot about cloud security that is beyond your control. But there are definitely some things you can do to decrease your chances of being a victim. All of them require you to do a bit of homework, and be a lot more proactive. If you are really worried about your data in the cloud, think about this: Be Careful With Whom You Do Business Perhaps Target has been beaten enough for that horrible data breach that happened on their watch. Perhaps not. While it is true that Target was also a victim of bad people doing bad things, they were also the keepers of a lot of sensitive data with which they were entrusted. They betrayed that trust by their amateur hour security practices. According to the settlement agreement, they will be punished, but not nearly enough. There was nothing you could have done about that data breach. But Target is one of the retailers involved in a mobile payment scheme called CurrentC. The retailers in this future debacle are in it for the wrong reasons. They are not doing it to offer value to customers, or to fix a broken system. They are doing it because of who they donât like. Security is clearly not a priority for them, as they have already been breached before they even launch. There is enough information about this system to categorically advise against using it. Donât just automatically trust every payment scheme that comes along. Do some research and make an informed decision about who you will do business with. Choose the Right Hosting Service It is easy to be angry at big businesses for getting cloud security wrong. But what about when you start a small business of your own? Grant a wish at work - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Ive previously blogged about the American company Zappos and how happy they are. Ive had the opportunity to visit them several times and their energy, vision and culture blows me away every time. My good friend Jamie Naughton who works for Zappos recently sent me this video from one of their all-hands meetings. This clip is from the Zappos Wishez part of the program: Heres a video that explains the program a little more and shows some examples of previously granted wishes: I love this program because it ties into two of the most important things that make us happy. First of all, the happiness research shows that the best way to become happier yourself is to make someone else happy. I think it says something incredibly positive about us human beings as a species, that we gain the most happiness from increasing the happiness of others. Also, this program builds positive relationships inside the organization, again one of the most important drivers of happiness in the workplace. Your take What do you think?
